A Bermuda Sunset

In the fall Bermuda has amazing sunsets and if you get any clouds to go with it you will find yourself with an amazing site.   A great spot to shoot from is the top of Fort Scaur which I posted day times pics from a few days ago.   This was last nights sunset followed by a few night shots of Gibbs Hill lighthouse and a sunset time-lapse video.  Enjoy.

When I arrived it was obvious it was going to be a good one.

Couldn't resist catching the glow of sunset off some foliage.

Behind me the moon was looking pretty good as well.

And the time-lapse of what I was shooting for 20 minutes;

Once the sun had set I figured I'd head up to Gibbs Hill lighthouse.   I had never shot the X-T1 at night before and I was doing everything handheld.  I learned a few lessons.  Not very happy with the pictures below, they have noise in them and need some exposure work but now I know what to do and will head back up early next week for another attempt.

Royal Naval Cemetery

As I mentioned in my last post, I spent a few hours yesterday up at the Royal Naval Cemetery located on the west end of Bermuda.   This is a very interesting place to those who love history and untold stories.   Below is a mixture of photos that will bore most people but others may find it interesting to see how things were done in the 1800's.

Headstones that contain the cause of death, others with amazing artwork, some with phrases rarely seen today and amazing the condition some of them are in considering the very destructive nature of Bermuda's weather.  Some of these headstones are 150-200 years old yet are still readable and in amazing condition.

The photos are a mixture of colour and black and white.  The day started overcast and the mood seemed fit for b&w but as the morning wore on the sun tilted more towards colour.

It says 1819 but I found a stone dated 1818, the picture is down below away.

As seen from the road, you wander down through the stones but it's worth  going off the trail and checking out the stones.  But watch where you walk.

A Bermuda/Canadian Mystery

I was going to do one long post of my morning up at the Royal Naval Cemetery but I decided to split off one little "mystery" that I want to post with a Bermuda group on Facebook who might have the answer.  My quick google searches have not found anything.

For many years I have been captivated with the cemetery but there is one set of grave stones near the back north side that have always had me questioning "what happened".   Looks like a Canadian transport plane or some other type of plane may have crashed or had some kind of accident on 6 Feb 1945.   These are the grave stones;

Anyone out there know the story of what happened?

Mystery Solved - the folks on Facebook took about 1 hour to post the results;

  • Peter Smith Liberator KL396 crashed soon after takeoff on 6 Feb 1945. Martin, Talbot, Coott, Lagadec, Grace casualties
    17 mins · Edited · Like
  • Derek Mitchell As above - Liberator KL386.
    Crashed into the sea shortly after take off following a refuelling stop. Aircraft was on route to the Middle East.
    There were 5 Casualties.

    MARTIN, H.M. - Pilot (Canadian Civilian)
    TALBOT, E.C. - Co-Pilot (Canadian Civilian)
    COOTT W.A. - Navigator RCAF
    LAGADEC J.P. - Wireless Op (Canadian Civilian)

Odds and Sods

A few pictures from a trip to the west end this morning.   The purpose of the trip was to photograph some interesting stuff at the Royal Naval Cemetery and that post will come tomorrow.  A much bigger story to put together.

But as I was leaving the area the skies started getting interesting.   There is a storm front moving in late this afternoon and tonight but seems the weather man got it wrong.  Right after these pics it poured rain!   I had a lovely wet ride back to Paget - :-)

From Boaz Island where I used to live I could tell the weather was going to get interesting.

There are currently 2 cruise ships in so some of the local charter boats are loaded up with tourists. I did zoom in the image but there are some rather disturbing sights in outfits they should not be allowed to wear.
Looking over at the former CFS Bermuda, then the former 9 Beaches
The house on the left is the former CO's house of CFS Bermuda
Looking over at Cambridge Beach Resort
Fishing
St James Church, right before the rain came down.

Tomorrows post is something that is fascinating to me but might be rather boring to most of you so check back and see :-)
